Learn elements of a highly-disciplined and popular artform

Musical theatre is an often-derided branch of theatre, but as an artform is has at least as much breadth in subject matter, emotional depth and style as any other dramatic art. It's performers have to be highly-skilled in acting, singing and dance and have to be able to repeat their energetic performances eight times a week, unlike opera or ballet performers. They are also extremely popular both to watch and to perform in; more people watch theatre productions each week than attend live football matches.

Varied skills-based curriculum

“Year Groups 1-6 have enjoyed excellent classes incorporating dance, drama and singing. These are keenly looked forward to by the children and help to develop their confidence, speaking and listening and performance skills. Both curricular and after-school classes have been very popular.”

Our musical theatre classes combine a large part of our drama curriculum and add to it some skills and techniques in dance and group singing to give an all-round introduction to stage performance skills. This is a popular choice for schools both in curricular time and for extra-curricular clubs because of the variety in the types of skills taught.

Our musical theatre classes are still heavily drama-based as we believe drama, acting and storytelling to be essential elements of all aspects of musical theatre, including singing and dancing. The songs, music and dances we use are not all from traditional musical theatre, however; they cover a wide range of styles and cultures.

Whilst we cannot cover drama skills in the same depth as specialist drama classes, we teach the essential elements of acting, improvisation, group devising and story structure and may also cover other drama topics such as mime, script work, film or video, technical theatre and theatre production.

On top of this drama base, we add some basic skills in group singing and dance, including voice control, projection, melody, breathing, music and movement and creating and performing dance steps and routines.
